Sukkot, often referred to as the Feast of Booths or Tabernacles, is one of the most vibrant and meaningful festivals in Jewish life. Rooted in both agricultural and spiritual traditions, it combines ritual observance with community celebration. Every year, Jewish families around the world come together to build sukkahs, wave the Four Species, and embrace the joy of gathering as a community.

As Sukkot approaches, it is worth exploring the customs that make this festival so distinctive, and how these traditions will come to life in a remarkable way during the UK’s first organised Sukkot celebration at Unico Hotels Margate from 6–16 October 2025.

Building the Sukkah

The most recognisable tradition of Sukkot is the construction of the sukkah, a temporary hut with a roof made from natural materials such as branches or leaves. Families decorate their sukkahs with fruit, colourful fabrics, and lights, transforming them into warm, welcoming spaces.

Building the Sukkah

The sukkah serves as both a symbolic dwelling and a place to eat, celebrate, and sometimes even sleep. Its fragility is intentional, reminding us of the Israelites’ journey through the desert and the temporary shelters they relied upon.

The Four Species (Arba Minim)

Another defining custom of Sukkot is the ritual of the Four Species:

  • Lulav (palm frond) – symbolises the spine and uprightness.

  • Etrog (citron) – represents the heart, reflecting devotion.

  • Hadassim (myrtle branches) – symbolise the eyes, guiding vision.

  • Aravot (willow branches) – represent the lips and prayer.

By holding and waving these species together, worshippers demonstrate unity among the Jewish people, regardless of differences.

Ushpizin – Welcoming Guests

During Sukkot, it is traditional to welcome symbolic “guests” known as ushpizin into the sukkah. These guests, drawn from biblical figures such as Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and King David, represent values like kindness, faith, and leadership. The practice also inspires communities to extend hospitality to friends, family, and even strangers.

Joy and Hospitality

Sukkot is known as Z’man Simchateinu, “the season of our joy.” Unlike solemn holidays, this festival encourages music, dancing, and communal meals. Inviting others into the sukkah is seen not only as a tradition but as a mitzvah, spreading happiness and generosity.

The hotel will provide kosher-certified dining, community activities, and a setting where traditions can be honoured while also enjoying modern comforts by the seaside.

Booking for the Event

Margate: A Coastal Backdrop for Tradition

Margate’s seaside charm adds a new dimension to Sukkot. For many, celebrating the festival by the sea will be a unique experience—combining Jewish tradition with the natural beauty of the Kent coast. Families will be able to enjoy both the rituals of Sukkot and the leisure of a coastal holiday.

A Living Connection Between Past and Present

The traditions of Sukkot carry lessons of resilience, gratitude, and unity. By celebrating these customs in Margate, Jewish families in 2025 will participate in something both timeless and historic. The festival’s deep roots will meet the modern experience of a UK holiday, creating memories for generations.
