Sukkot, often referred to as the Feast of Tabernacles, is a significant festival in the Jewish calendar, observed five days after Yom Kippur, typically in September or October. Known in Hebrew as "Sukkot Sameach", meaning "Happy Sukkot," this celebration commemorates the Israelites’ forty-year journey through the desert after leaving Egypt. It is a time of joy, reflection, and gratitude for the harvest and life’s blessings.

Sukkot Celebration

During Sukkot, Jewish families build a temporary structure called a Sukkah, symbolising the fragile dwellings used by their ancestors in the desert. The Sukkah is often decorated with natural materials, fruits, and lights, creating a festive and inviting atmosphere. Meals are eaten within the Sukkah, and some families even sleep there, immersing themselves fully in the holiday’s spirit.

Another central ritual involves the Four Species – the Lulav (palm), Etrog (citron), Hadas (myrtle), and Aravah (willow). These are waved in a prescribed manner during prayers, symbolising unity, growth, and reverence for God’s blessings. Sukkot is not only a celebration of history but also an expression of faith, community, and gratitude.

The festival typically lasts seven days in Israel and eight days in the diaspora, with the first day being especially sacred. It is a time for family gatherings, spiritual reflection, and joyful celebrations that reinforce cultural and religious identity.
